For decades, the pony bead lizard keychain has been a favorite among crafters of all ages. Whether you first encountered them at summer camp, learned from a friend on the playground, or stumbled upon them in a nostalgic craft book, chances are this little beaded reptile has crossed your path at some point. The pony bead lizard keychain is one of those iconic crafts that feels both timeless and delightfully simple, yet endlessly customizable.

Today, the lizard continues to be one of the most popular pony bead designs. It is fun to make, easy to personalize, and practical as a keychain or bag charm. Even though you might already know the basics of creating one, there’s more to these colorful creatures than meets the eye. Let’s take a look at the story behind pony bead lizards, their appeal as a beginner-friendly craft, and the many ways you can enjoy and personalize them.

The Origins of Pony Bead Lizards

Pony beads themselves date back to the mid-20th century, originally produced as inexpensive plastic beads for children’s crafts and jewelry. Their bright colors, affordability, and large threading holes made them ideal for schools, camps, and community programs. By the 1990s, pony bead crafts had hit their peak popularity, especially in North America, becoming a staple of summer camps, scout troops, and after-school programs.

The lizard keychain design quickly rose to fame during this era. Its popularity can be credited to its approachable shape and the sense of accomplishment that comes with finishing it. The lizard became a craft-world mascot of sorts, a creature that kids and teens could proudly display on their backpacks or key rings.

Even today, crafting a pony bead lizard is almost a rite of passage. It’s often the first “animal” that beginners attempt, and once you learn how to make one, you gain the skills to branch out into other bead animals like turtles, frogs, or even dragons.

Supplies You’ll Need

Before you get started, gather the following supplies:

I recommend using pony beads because they’re large, inexpensive, and easy to handle. If you want to make a smaller lizard, you can use seed beads and beading wire instead of lacing, but be prepared for a more delicate project.

Step 1: Prepare Your Lacing

Cut about 60″ of Pony Bead Lacing. This might seem like more than you need, but it’s always better to start with extra.

Fold the lacing in half so you know where the center is. Then pull it through the key ring to secure it.

Step 2: Lay Out Your Pattern

Use the photo below to lay out your pattern in pony beads. Feel free to experiment with different colors and get creative.

Step 3: String the Beads

Begin by stringing the top row of beads onto the left lacing.

Then thread the right lacing up through the beads.

Now pull the lacings in opposite directions.

Continue pulling until taut where the beads are in place. Avoid pulling too tight or stretching the lacing. These will cause the rows of beads to curl up.

Step 4: Add More Rows

Continue adding the next two rows of beads by repeating Step 3. Move from top to bottom through the pattern.

Step 5: Add the Arms

To add an arm, string all four of the beads onto each lacing.

Then loop each lacing around and back through the first arm bead.

Step 6: Add More Rows

Repeat Step 3 to continue adding rows from top to bottom until you reach the legs.

Step 7: Add the Legs

Add the legs just as you did the arms in Step 5.

Step 8: Add the Tail

Again, use the technique in Step 3 to add the rows of beads making up the tail.

Step 9: Secure the Ends

Tie each lacing in a knot to secure. A single knot is fine when working with Pony Bead Lacing.

Step 6: Trim Excess Lacing

Use craft scissors to trim any excess lacing away from the knots.

You made a pony bead lizard! Add it to your boat tote, key ring or purse for a touch of everyday whimsy.

Personalizing Your Pony Bead Lizard

One of the best things about pony bead lizards is how customizable they are. A classic version usually uses green or brown beads for the body, but why stop there?

Here are a few creative ways to give your lizard its own unique style:

Because the design is relatively simple, it’s easy to adapt and play with. Every lizard can be one of a kind, which makes them fun to collect or trade.
